Lake Macatawa Advisory Lifted

HOLLAND TOWNSHIP -- A no-swimming advisory for Lake Macatawa at Dunton Park has been lifted in time for Saturday's 22nd annual Lake Macatawa Triathlon. The beach was closed May 31 because E. coli levels exceeded state water quality standards. An analysis of at least three samples taken Wednesday found a geometric average of 23.3 colonies of E. coli per 100 milliliters of water, well below the state standard of 300 parts per milliliters and last week's sample, which had a geometric average of 347.13. E. coli contamination historically has been a problem at Dunton Park, on the north side of Lake Macatawa near a heavily industrial area. That location was the only one closed last week of the 15 sites being tested through the summer for E. coli levels. More than 200 athletes are expected to take part in the triathlon that includes a half mile swim, 4.8 mile run and 22.8 mile bike ride.
