A SURE SIGN IT WILL RAIN.

Last night while out on a bike ride on the river path, I noticed a couple of things that were unusual: there were hardly any other riders out except a couple of kids and the occasional bums on bikes that wander through there frequently, shirtless, long stragly hair, and cigarettes hanging out of their mouths, and ANT HILLS. Dozens and dozens of ant hills. All over the path, all over the cracks in the road, everywhere.

Just like my reliable wind chime, which only tinkles when it will rain sometime within 24 hours, ant hills are another reliable indicator of imminent rain. And guess what we had this morning? A huge thunder shower.

Makes you wonder what those meteorologists actually look at when predicting the weather?

Yes, you are right what DO they look at or for when determining the weather...

I can always tell by the way the leaves of certain trees are before it rains, if the underside is showing, it's going to rain.

PS. as per your note, YES, are we very lucky? And, aren't we GREAT to be able to do all that we do?

I didn't know that about ant hills!

I did not know that either. I read another blog by a woman named Vicky. She is Ottawa (where I live) a few blocks from my house. And it did not take thunder here. :)

Hey...you saw some of my relatives out on their bikes?? (kidding ;))

I can tell rain is near when the millipedes come out on my running trail.

Wild! I wonder why the connection between the ant hills and the rain. I know it's going to rain here when I hear the thunder and see the black clouds. :D (And more than once I've been oblivious enough that I was a few miles into my run before I noticed that. Dang!)

I didn't know that but when I run I always take care not to trample on the ants.

never heard of that. well, there's a huge anthill in my driveway, but no rain. i'm not sure that prediction method works where I live.

Hi Vicki, just stumbled upon your blog and what a nice piece of grandmother's wisdom. I had never heard of this but for sure will pay attention to it from now on. Nice blog. I will be back to read more.

I used to say I enjoy the snow but hate the cold. But now that I run, I dread ice under foot. So if the prediction you heard are true that it will be a cold winter.. maybe the best to hope for is less ice and snow? (especially on trails and road shoulders).
I didn't use the flash on the mirror picture.
Thanks for comments...
